Indigenous breeds help farmers to generate income
Project No. 27-0637-01

The first days of having green leg chicken on our farm was very nerve-racking for us. As project manager I was terrified the most. I though that the tiny brown ball - the chicken ?? which I was holding in my hand would behave totally unpredictable in the future. We still had in our minds facts from the previous training. Our lectures presented green leg chicken to us a wild bird for which there was no fence to go through. However, after few weeks it turned out that these wild birds were behaving quite well, although they were a bit more active in exploring surrounding than the rest of the poultry. Once we realized that they can disappear during the day, but that they always find their way back to their shed at night we calmed down. Most of us was making fun that we have got a sport type of chicken that needs to make exercises all the time to get fit.

Only Mr. Wladek from Bachanow village was still complaining on his vigorous small green leg roosters. According to the hatchery plan it was supposed to have 2-3 in each flock, but it happened that in the own he had there were as many as 6 of them. It was not a problem for himself, since as he was joking a chicken soup was his favorite dish. He was just a bit afraid of the visitors to his farm. He had just decided to set up agro ??tourist activities on the farm. ??My mom will take care of the chickens and I myself will bolster family finances by agro tourist activity? ?? proudly said young farmer.

The conditions of starting agro tourist activity on the Waldek??s farm are excellent. The farm is located in a very picturesque part of the park called the Black Hancza valley. This Hancza river can be seen from the farmer??s house and in a distance of 200 meters there is the deepest lake in Poland ?? Hańcza lake. The visitors could enjoy crystal clear water and clean air as well as primeval nature and local tradition.

Waldek decided to renovate one room in his house and accommodate it for tourist purposes. He thought that flock of poultry on his farm would add attractions to it. With was imagining colorful green leg chicken walking on the fresh grass to the river and smiled to himself, since such view was attractive also to himself.

It turned out, however, that there were more roosters than usual in the flock, which he and his mother had received, and that they were terribly noisy. Well, this was a very gentle way of describing the sound that they were producing. Their scream sounded terrifying like in a horror movie and started early in the morning every day. The farmer said that it was as if the cats stripped off the skin.

There was already May and the nightingale??s warbles were supposed to be heard, but the only sound that stuck the ears was wild screaming of the roosters. Mr. Waldek couldn??t sleep at nights. When the noise woke him up every nigh at 3 am, he started thinking of giving up his dreams about agro tourist activities. The visitors were looking for quite and peaceful place to spend their holidays and his farm was not reminding such a place any more.

Fortunately, few weeks later the roosters have their voiced improved significantly. When the first tourist arrived to the village they immediately started asking about the owner of those beautiful crowing roosters. They follow the sound and they came direct into Mr. Waldek house.
