Horse Agro Tourism Helps the Farmers of Miedzylesie Region
Project no 27-661-01

Mr. Jan Galusza, who is 41 years old farmer, lives with his wife and two children ā?? Joasia 16th years old and Krzysztof 14th years old- in the village of Pisary. They run small farm of 11 hectares of land that Jan inherited after his parents. The farm and the house are located on the hill as high as 650 meters above the sea level. The closest village road is 300 m away from it.

Difficult conditions of farming that Jan had to cope with forced him to become innovative and to adjust his machines as well as methods of land cultivation to the hilly area. Being isolated from the village he also had to learn how to repair the buildings, machines and manage everything himself. He passed this knowledge to his son, who is currently mature enough to help him with his work on the farm. In the past location of the farm created a huge burden for the family and was a serious constrain to its effective operation. But now, when more and more people from the towns look for quite places to spend their vacations or weekends in to have a house on the hill and far away from civilization may be an advantage for the family of Galusza.

Jan has already added to their old house a section to be offered to the visitors during coming winter and the next summer vacations. He knew that in order to be successful he needed a special attraction to be offered to the quests to make them staying on his farm. Along with his son Krzysztof they came up with an idea of having a horse and were dreaming of obtaining the one of Hucul breed that is so suitable for horse back riding in hilly area. They were aware, however, that these horses were too expensive for the family to purchase one itself.

It was an extremely happy day for Jan, therefore, when he learned that he was accepted for HPI project and that he was selected for one of the first recipients of the horses. On the day of the animalsā?? delivery to the village the whole family dressed up very nicely and went to the village. They were almost running down the hill to reach the meeting place as quick as possible. When they finally saw beautiful HPI horses that were exposed to the public on a village yard, they couldnā??t wait to take one of them to their barn, which they had nicely renovated and prepared for that purpose.

The ceremony of signing the agreements with the horsesā?? recipients took place during the folk festival in the village, so everybody could admire the animals which made the family of Galusza even more excited, happy and proud. Observing the interest of other farmers and the visitors in the horses Jan was becoming more and more confident that his tourist services would really help him to make decent income for his family. He was looking at the Hucul horse just received from HPI and was thinking that finally he fully understood what it meant to receive a ā??fishing rodā? that employees of HPI office had been talking about during the meetings with the farmers in his village.
