Polish Landrace swine for swine producers in Ryglice
Project No. 27-0639-01

The family of Stojak, who lives in the village of Kowala, was included into the second phase of HPI project in the year of 2005. Krystyna and her husband Wieslaw have got four children, who are 10, 7, 6, and 4 years old. Krystyna is occupied with taking care of the kids at home and helps her husband with the farm work in high season. Fortunately, Wieslawa's parents - Zuzanna and Aleksander - live with the young couple in the same hose and they serve their advice and labor any time Wieslaw needs their assistance.

The family farm of 6 ha is used manly for growing corn and potatoes. Part of it is also assigned for pastures. Since this is traditionally run farm there are different kinds of animals kept on it. Wislaw has got 1 horse, which helps him to do his field work on the slopping hills, as well as 2 cows and 4 sows, including 2 received in the framework of HPI project. The production of fatteners on the farm is currently 25 heads per year. It is not a lot in terms of generated income, but since the farm is the only source of income for the family of 8 people, this production constitutes a great support for its members.

Wieslaw always wanted to become a farmer and this why he decided for vocational school of agriculture, which he successfully finished. Unfortunately, he came from very poor family and didnâ??t have enough funds to invest into improvements of his farm. He wanted to increase the number of pigs in the piggery and specialize in pork production, since this is what everybody did in his village. To do so, however, he needed to secure proper conditions for the animals, which meant for him to renovate the old buildings. To save for that, Wieslaw accepted any kind of temporary or seasonal job available in the region. This was not enough, however, to help the situation. Only last year he received a subsidy for small scale farmers and he decided to take advantage of it. The subsidy was very small, but created an unique opportunity for Wieslaw. He bought necessary materials and was working very diligently in order to fix the farm buildings himself. When he proudly accomplished his task he enthusiastically applied for participation in HPI project. He considered this initiative as a great chance for bettering life of his family. Knowing determination of Wieslaw the group members included him into project. It was a happy day for Wieslaw and his family when two beautiful, breeding sows arrived into his newly renovated piggery. Looking at them, he finally started gaining confidence that he doesnâ??t have to be poor till the end of his live and that he can secure better life for his children.
