No. 27-0659-01 Beef Cattle for Farmers from Sejny District
The goal of the HPI project is to enable impoverished farmers to regain their self-reliance they lost after the transformation to a free market economy. During the project fifteen original families will receive two pregnant Limousine breed heifers each while at least another fifteen will join in through receiving pass-on of offspring. A breeding bull, electric fence chargers, pasture seeds mix and one barn disinfecting set with chemicals will also be financed from HPI funds. The seeds mix and one barn disinfecting set with chemicals will also be financed from HPI funds. The gift of beef cattle heifers and coaching in ?group building? efforts will allow farmers to once again support their from agriculture. Participants of the project, most of them of Lithuanian minority background, live in a few villages of the Sejny District. The average size of the farms is 10 hectares. Large areas of pastures and meadows favor grazing animals like beef cattle.
The project will be managed by the Association for Rural Development ?Zegary?, which was officially registered in September 2006. The Association is to allow impoverished farmers to join their efforts to improve their financial status. Even though the group is very new, it already has excellent cooperation with local extension services, local self-government, local representatives of National Association of Beef Cattle Breeders and National Association of Beef Producers.
