Development of Sheep Breeding in Górowo Community
No. 27-0653-01

This project will be conducted in the community of Górowo Illaweckie, located in north-eastern Poland, very close to the Polish border with Russia (Kalliningrad). This is very clean and picturesque part of the country with many primeval forests. Neither industry nor big cities have been ever developed in there and as many as 50% of its inhabitants are involved in agriculture. Many farms in this region of the country are small, run in a traditional way and do not provide for the families. To improve their situation development of sheep breeding would be appropriate, since there is a lot of grasslands available around and demand for sheep meat is growing on local and European market. The farmers, however, can't afford buying quality animals on their own. This is why HPI is going to support 10 farm families with 20 heads of breeding sheep each. Another 20 families will be involved into project activities in the following years through passing on the gift. This project will ensure improvement of nutrition and income of at least 30 rural families in the community of Górowo Illaweckie. It will also contribute significantly to protection of the natural environment, because sheep grazing helps to keep composition of meadows' plants in a proper balance. Moreover, four of the farmers belonging to the group have converted their farms into organic ones and others would like to do the same in the future.
