Indigenous Breeds of Heifers and Horses for the Farmers of the National Park of Wigry No. 27-0649-01-1
This project will assist the farmers who live in the boundaries of the National Park of Wigry. Legal restrictions imposed on the inhabitants of this part of the country prevent development of industry and intensive farming. As a result small, extensively run farms in the area don't generate enough income for the families. To help this situation, special agricultural programs are being introduced to the local villages. Being able to offer fresh and healthy milk products as well as horse riding to the tourists, the local farmers would be able to make living. Moreover, herds of indigenous breeds, ones developed, can be subsidized by the government to provide additional income. The local breeds of animals, however, are quite expensive and an effort of different partners is needed to make such programs successful. Since the local farmers are dedicated to the development of small scale animal production in harmony with nature, they have been already assisted by National Fund for Environment Protection and GEF. HPI would like to join these efforts and to help the farmers through providing 12 local families with 6 mares of native Konik Polski breed mares and 6 heifers of Polish Red heifers. Additionally, HPI will provide training on cattle and horse breeding, organic farming, and environment protection to the project participants.
The project will be managed by the Association "Conference of Nature Conservation Service for Green Lungs of Poland"
