Bee keeping in Żegocina Community
No. 27-0647-01

This project will be conducted for the farmers of Żegocina community located in the Carpathian Mountains. The farms in this region are small and their production is used predominately for self-supply of the families. Despite the harsh climate and poor stony soil, local farmers are dedicated to working very hard on their small pieces of land to sustain their families. They do not have any other opportunities to generate income due to the high rate of unemployment in the region. The development of bee breeding would be a perfect way for them to improve their economic situation. The clean environment and many forests around are very supportive for conducting this type of agricultural production. It is also important that most of the farmers in Żegocina are experienced in beekeeping, since it has been always an option for small scale farmers. Sale of the highly priced and good quality bee products can still be profitable. It requires, however, a high initial investment that the local farmers can not afford. To help the neediest of these families develop bee breeding, HPI will provide 20 farmers with 10 good quality bee families. Additionally, the group will be provided with some laboratory equipment for controlling the quality of honey to be sold in the market at the good price.
