Development of Beekeeping and Agro tourism in Eastern Carpathian Region No. 27-0644-21-1
Carpathian Mountain is the eastern wing of the great central mountain system of Europe curving 1500 km along the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, and the Ukraine. Its unique wildlife, landscape, and cultural heritage are protected nationally (Bieszczadzki National Park) and internationally (the International Biosphere Reserve in the Eastern Carpathians, which is under UNESCO Auspices from 1993).
This project is implemented in the southern east Poland and serves the needy farmers living in the communities of Lesko, Cisna, Komańcza, Lutowiska, Bukowsko, Sanok, and Baligród. They are situated in the boundaries of the Bieszczadzki National Park that imposes legal limitations on farming activities. Consequently, development of farming in this region has to be carefully tailored to stay in harmony with the nature. At the same time it should be a source of income for farm families, who donā??t have employment opportunities outside agriculture.
To find a proper balance between the needs of human beings and of the nature is not an easy task to achieve. However, while analyzing situation of the farmers in the region HPI has found many examples of environmentally friendly agricultural practices introduced by them. Impressed by their determination to continue their traditional lifestyle we have decided to support their efforts. Multidimensional HPI project developed in cooperation with local farmers aims at development of beekeeping and horse breeding for tourism purposes, as well as at learning about herbs and on how to collect them from the nature. In the framework of the project 8 families will receive ten bee families each and five organic and agrotourism farms will receive nine mares. Moreover, educational programs on herbs' gathering, preservation, and method of using them at homes will be offered to 30 rural inhabitants, mainly women, unemployed and youth.
