Development of Multipurpose Cattle Breeding in Tyrawa Woloska No. 27-0643-21-1
The transformation of the economic system in Poland significantly reduced the economic well being of farm families. As a result 60% of Poland's poor live in the country and make up 22% of the rural population. Last national research on poverty level selected Tyrawa Wołowska as one of ten poorest counties in Poland out of 2478 counties existing in the country.
Tyrawa Wołowska is located in the beautiful mountains of southeastern Poland, where there are hard conditions for farming. Therefore, agriculture in this region is rarely profitable and low income makes it difficult for the farmers to invest in farm improvements.
To help the poorest farmers of this region HPI has started Simmental cattle project in cooperation with them. There is a long tradition of breeding this dual-purpose cattle in this part of the country, since it is well suited to local conditions. Most of the farmers are dreaming of improving their small and old herds of Simmental cattle to be able to sell milk and meat at a reasonable price. To be able to do so, they would need to replace their old cows with the quality ones, which is not affordable for most of them. This is why HPI office in Poland will purchase 20 Simmenatl heifers for 12 farm families to help them to improve and increase their herds. Another 20 families will benefit from the project, receiving animals through passing on the gift. The main goal of this project is to achieve food security and sustainable income for project participants.
