Indigenous Breeds Help Farmers Generate Income No. 27-0637-01-1
The projects is to be conducted with the farmers who live on the territory of the Suwalki Landscape Park, located in the north-east part of Poland, very close to Lithuanian border. The farms in this region are small and run in a traditional way. It is determined by the history of this region, but also national laws, which protects this beautiful corner of the northeast Poland, putting limitations on development of either agriculture or the industry. As a result the people of this region are poor and don't have opportunities for generating income through out of agriculture activities. The local farmers, however, are dedicated to farming and determined to keep on developing small scale animal production, which would stay in harmony with environment protection. HPI would like to assist 18 of them through providing them with local breeds of Green Leg chicken and indigenous breed of Suwalska Geese, which has almost disappeared in this region and is being reintroduced.
The project will be conducted by the Association of the Friends of Suwalski Landscape Park called "KRAINA HAŃCZY", which was established in June of 1994. The main goal of the Association is to initiate, undertake, and to support activities, which protect the nature, traditional village life and the culture of the Suwalski Landscape Park. The farmers, who live within the boundaries in the framework of the park, willingly take part in the programs offered to them by the Association, believing that they make the region attractive for the visitors, which creates for them better chances for selling their agricultural products.
