Changing Lives through Pig and Cattle Production in Smigiel Community No. 27-0636-01-1
The community of Smigiel is located in the western part of Poland. In the past the small scale farmers of that region were employed outside agriculture and were using their small farms to produce for family consumption. When due to economic changes they lost their permanent source of income it became really difficult for them to pay even the utilities. Many of them were forced to apply to Local Welfare Centre for assistance in order to survive. It was a real shame for the families, who used to support themselves in the past. While searching for solution to their unfortunate situation, they decided to apply for HPI assistance to help them to develop swine and cattle productions that have been always dominant in their area. As a result HPI project has been prepared to provide the poorest farmers of this region with Simmental cattle and landrace pigs. Multi-purpose Simmental cattle will help the farmers obtain milk and meat for the families. Pigs, on the other hand, will help them generate some income, bettering their lives. Cereal and potatoes will be grown to feed the animals, and manure will be used as fertilizer.
The project will be managed by the Local Welfare Center in Smigiel.
