Organic Farming for Homeless No. 27-0626-70-2
This project is conducted in cooperation with a local non-governmental organization called BARKA, which helps homeless people come back to a normal life through making a living from farming. To provide shelters for the homeless "Barka" purchased state farms or abandoned homesteads at a very low price. All repairs to the homes and buildings are being done by the farms' residents themselves. Life inside these farming communities is based on partnership. Members of the groups make all decisions together and share food and money. Each community is responsible for its own development and management.
To help BARKA, in 1999 HPI started swine and chicken project with its farm communities in the villages of Posadowko and Chudopczyce, situated in the western part of Poland close to the city of Poznan.
This project was very successful, and the organization was able to use resources in a very effective way. Therefore, HPI decided to support BARKA once again and to help it with transforming farm in Chudopczyce into organic one. By helping the farm of Chudopczyce to achieve certified organic farm status, HPI will create conditions for BARKA residents to generate decent income from farming and to become sustainable in the future.
