Polish Red Cattle Breeding for Family Farms in Dobra Community No. 27-0612-01
The Dobra Community is located in Southern Poland and consists of eleven villages (about 1500 families). Farming conditions are difficult there, because most of the farmland and pastures are located on hill slopes and are hard to access. Poor soil and harsh weather are the other factors adding to the difficulties farmers have to overcome to be able to lead their traditional way of life. It is crucial for them to obtain self-sufficiency and to draw reasonable profit from agriculture activity, because for majority of them this is the only source of cash.
To improve nutrition and income, HPI provided 45 farm families with 90 pregnant heifers of Polish Red cattle. This indigenous breed of cattle perfectly suits small farms in the mountainÂ?ous conditions of Dobra and produces good quality and quantity of milk. Moreover, through this project HPI contributed to preservation of biodiversity in agriculture.
